At least five runners were injured in the first bull run of this year’s “Sanfermines” festival on Friday. Animal protection groups protested the controversial event in Spain.
The runners mainly suffered bruises, reports the state television channel RTVE. One of the young men suffered a concussion in a fall. It is said that no serious injuries were sustained from the bulls’ long, pointed horns. The injured have all been taken to a hospital.
The annual bullfights in the Spanish city of Pamplona started on Thursday and will continue until next Friday. Every day in the early morning, six bulls, some weighing more than 600 kilograms, and some tame lead oxen are chased through the narrow streets of the old town. In the evening the bullfights take place in the arena. Since 1924 there have been 16 fatalities, most recently in 2009. The route from the old town to the bullring is 825 meters long and is mainly a test of young men’s courage.
Activists wore blood-red clothing
The event has been around since 1591. Animal protection groups protested again this year (see video above). The activists wore blood-red clothing and held up signs in multiple languages that read: “Pamplona: violence and death for the police.” Despite all the criticism, including from the local population, the festival attracts countless tourists from all over the world. Tens of thousands of people come here every year.
