The special police unit in Tyrol has uncovered another blatant case of benefit fraud. A Serb (51) is said to have feigned a disability for years and thus received a disability pension and care allowance. The damage is huge – is more than 100,000 euros!
Scammed by the state for years and no one noticed – until now! With the support of the Innsbruck/Neu-Arzl Police Station, the Social Security Fraud Task Force was able to unmask a suspected fraudster. “The 51-year-old Serb is suspected feigned a severe visual impairment to medical experts for six years in order to surreptitiously smuggle in a disability pension and payment of health care benefit for level 3 care,” the detectives said.
Car trips, work despite the “disability”
All in all, the man would have wrongly received more than 100,000 euros. During the course of the investigation it could be proven that the suspect had performed activities such as driving, building or cleaning.
Control started investigating
The executing man was spotted during a traffic check, Christoph Kirchmair, head of Innsbruck’s criminal division, told the APA. Because the 51-year-old had a disability card, officials were skeptical. The suspected fraudster was then observed doing work that was “out of line with his illness”.
The 51-year-old is now reported to the public prosecutor on suspicion of serious commercial fraud. So far he has not confessed.
