Difficult mission for the rescuers on Saturday evening in Großlobming (Murtal district) in Styria: A 61-year-old Brit came with his motorhome from the B77. The vehicle flipped over and caught fire. The man and his dog were rescued.
“The camper was completely engulfed in flames when we arrived on scene,” said operations manager Wolfgang Kampl, chief fire inspector for the Kleinlobming fire department. A 61-year-old Briton was driving his motorhome on the B77 from Köflach towards Judenburg at around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday evening when he went off the road for reasons that are still unclear.
The vehicle rolled 80 meters down the embankment, rolled over several times, also collided with several trees and finally came to a stop on a forest path. The vehicle then caught fire.
“A Massive Firefighting Attack”
The 61-year-old managed to free himself from the vehicle and was found conscious next to the mobile home. After first aid from the rescue workers, the man was taken to the Graz regional hospital with the Christophorus 17 rescue helicopter.
Meanwhile, the volunteer fire brigades of Kleinlobming, Großlobming and Apfelberg extinguished the burning camper. “It was a massive firefighting attack because the fire had already spread to the adjacent forest,” says Kampl. A gas bottle that had been in the camper also had to be salvaged.
The British dog was also rescued
And then there was an animal mission: “Even a dog that was in the vehicle could be brought to safety.” It took three hours for the operation to be completed.
