35 degrees and rain – highest warning level: heat and floods torment Japan

Date:

The southwest of Japan has been experiencing heavy rainfall for days. Streams have now developed into raging rivers. The rest of the country, on the other hand, has to deal with completely different weather extremes.

At least one person has been killed in heavy rain in southwestern Japan. The victim is an elderly woman in Fukuoka prefecture on Kyushu, Japan’s southwestern main island, whose home was trapped by a mudslide, local media reported Monday.

Highest warning level declared
Meanwhile, the National Weather Bureau has issued the highest alert level for Fukuoka and neighboring Oita Prefecture due to flood and landslide hazards.

The residents were called upon to take immediate measures to protect their own safety. For days, the south and west of the archipelago are covered with sometimes record heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of residents were called to safety. Landslides occurred in several places and raging rivers overflowed their banks. Train connections were interrupted. The weather bureau warned of further rain from the west to northeast of the country

Heat wave in other parts of the country
While the south and west of the archipelago are affected by flooding, the rest of the country is hit by a heat wave in combination with high humidity. In the capital Tokyo, the mercury rose above 35 degrees for the first time since the beginning of the year on Monday.

The Ministry of the Environment and the National Meteorological Agency have issued a heat stroke warning for nine prefectures, including Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures of Saitama, Chiba and Ibaraki. Citizens were asked to stay indoors as cool as possible and to drink enough water.
