Police in Birkfeld, Eastern Styria, are investigating a derailment on the Feistritztalbahn, which was only recently running again: two wagons of the historic steam locomotive jumped off the rails on July 2 and tipped over to the side. Police are asking any witnesses to come forward.
“There will be no slow train rides until further notice due to the level crossing malfunction in July. After repairs and testing and approval by the authorities, we will of course resume steaming,” the posting on Facebook announced last week. There is “no reason to get excited – everything was quickly resolved.” The derailment happened around 5 p.m. Before that, the level crossing had already been used seven times on the same day without any problems. “The braking distance from derailment to standstill was 25 meters. rightly so”, was announced – with the caption: “No one was hurt.”
“The cause was the silting up of a non-public level crossing for a forest path. This happened as a result of previous renovation works on the forest path and the subsequent heavy rainfall in recent days,” the post continues. All passengers were taken to Birkfeld in private vehicles owned by railway employees. The route was cleared that same evening. A report has been sent to the district administration. Experts have been announced.
The police started an investigation
Now the police have also been called in: it is not clear whether anyone really was injured. There are also anonymous ads that claim the opposite. There is even talk of hospital treatment. The Birkfeld Police Inspectorate has now begun its investigation and is requesting information from the public. They also want to know how the accident could have happened. Potentially injured persons and witnesses should therefore report to the Birkfeld police inspection on 059/133-6262.
