Hotter than in Spain! – European record: scorching heat has us firmly in its grip

Date:

Temperatures in the country have been oppressive again since Monday. It’s the sweatiest day of the year so far. But that’s not all: Vienna was even the hottest capital on the continent on Monday.

A total of 37.2 degrees was measured in Vienna on Monday – our capital shone like no other in Europe. It was even hotter than in Algiers, where the thermometer showed a balmy 25 degrees, or in Tunis 31 degrees. Madrid took second place on Monday with 36 degrees in the ranking of the hottest cities in Europe, followed by Rome.

Heat hotspots in Austria were also Lower Austria and Burgenland, where over 37 degrees were measured. On the other hand, it was a bit cooler in the western regions with up to 33 degrees.

Many deaths from heat in the previous year
New calculations show how dangerous the high temperatures are. According to this report, more than 60,000 heat-related deaths were recorded in Europe in the summer of 2022 – the hottest summer on record on the continent. Most heat victims therefore fell in Italy (18,010), Spain (11,324) and Germany (8,173). Austria had 419 heat deaths.

Tricks for hot days
However, you can often make the high temperatures much more bearable with a few small tricks. The “Krone” has collected a few for you.

  • Airing only in the morning
Sleepless nights because the apartment gets unbearably hot? You don’t have to, because if you open all windows early in the morning and ventilate, you can significantly lower the indoor temperature. But watch out! Open windows have recently become a danger to several small children. Therefore, do not let the little ones lose sight of it while the room is being aired. Close the windows during the day and darken them with roller blinds or curtains. Hanging damp towels next to a window or fan will also keep the heat away.
  • Fresh mint in the drink
In hot weather, the body needs more than half a liter more than the recommended one and a half liters per day. Adults should therefore drink at least two liters per day. It doesn’t have to be ice cold drinks, though. Water, strained juices or chilled tea are suitable as thirst quenchers. In addition, drinks with fresh mint would work wonders in the heat.
  • Feet in cold water
Taking a lukewarm shower before going to bed and letting the water dry on your skin will lower your body temperature and help you fall asleep. Moist foot bandages give off cold. During the day it is advisable to run cold water over your wrists or take a foot bath. Experts do not recommend firing sports at high temperatures

Or you can simply imitate ORF presenter Armin Wolf and pour a bottle of water over your head. With his farewell from studio “ZiB 2” he surprised many viewers on Monday evening.
