Following the death of a great-grandmother in Australia from a Taser attack by police at a retirement home, her family has announced they will be suing the New South Wales state government. Because of the death of the 95-year-old, who suffers from dementia, the family wants to claim compensation in a civil suit, her lawyer Sam Tierney said on Tuesday.
Police were called to the retirement home in late May because a resident was “armed with a knife”. At the scene, the police officers said they repeatedly asked the old lady to drop her knife.
Went to the police with a walker and a knife
However, 95-year-old Clare Nowland approached the police officers “at a slow pace” with her walker. One of the officers then used a taser on the woman. The demented woman hit the back of her head on the ground and succumbed to her injuries a few days later in hospital.
Investigations against police officers
The police initially did not admit the use of the taser. However, the incident was also captured by the body cameras of the officers involved.
A 33-year-old police officer is being investigated for dangerous bodily harm. He must appear in court on September 6.
