Highway blocked – Mexico: 13 police officers taken hostage

Date:

13 police officers and officials were taken hostage during a violent protest in southern Mexico. The demonstration took place in the state of Guerrero on Monday and was led by the criminal organization Los Ardillos. The group is demanding the release of two of its leaders who were previously arrested on gun and drug charges.

Guerrero is known for the presence of numerous criminal organizations active in drug trafficking, extortion and kidnapping. About nine years ago, 43 students at a teacher training college in Guerrero state were kidnapped by corrupt police officers and handed over to the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel. Only bone fragments from three of the young men were later found and identified. The exact background of these incidents has not yet been fully clarified.

The government cannot be blackmailed
Thousands of residents from different parts of the region paralyzed the capital Chilpancingo on Monday. They blocked a highway, violently attacked security forces and hijacked an armored police car, driving them into the grounds of the local government palace. Although 300 officers were on duty, they avoided direct confrontation. The government prefers dialogue, but does not allow itself to be blackmailed. Twelve police officers and national guards were injured on Monday, local authorities said. The highway was closed again on Tuesday.
