The cycling boom in Vienna is currently unchecked. According to the Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ), a new record was even set in the first half of the year – although according to statistics there were five more rainy days this year than in the same period last year…
In the first half of the year, there were more cyclists than ever on the streets of the federal capital. According to the VCÖ, a total of 5.62 million cyclists were registered at all bicycle counting stations. Even last year’s comparative value was exceeded by 49,000.
Operngasse station back in first place
There are now a total of 18 automatic counting stations for bicycle traffic in Vienna. In 2022 there were only 13, but even if only those stations that have been in operation for a long time are considered, a best value can be reported, according to the VCÖ. Most motorcyclists this year are registered in Operngasse with 623,700. There was also a lot of cycling at the facilities on the Praterstern, on the Argentinierstraße and Lassallestraße.
The busiest cycling month was June with 1.58 million counts. The experience of recent years also shows that there is a lot of cycling in July and August, while car traffic in the city decreases in the summer.
More safety for cyclists in cities
According to Lina Mosshammer, however, it is important to build cycle paths of sufficient width to increase safety for cyclists in the neighbourhoods. Because car traffic needs less space to drive and park, especially in the summer months, the areas in question could also be used temporarily for bicycle traffic.
The bicycle as a means of transport – climate-friendly, cheap, healthy
According to Lina Mosshammer of the VCÖ, this development in cycling culture is gratifying. “Anyone who uses the bicycle as a means of transport is climate-friendly and cost-effectively mobile and therefore regularly gets a dose of healthy exercise. If you ride a bike instead of a car, you also relieve pressure on the roads, help reduce traffic jams and reduce tailpipe emissions.”
