After the failed uprising against the Russian army, the American four-star general Robert Abrams (62) is convinced: “We will never see Prigozhin again.” He now explained this to the American TV channel “ABC News”. According to Abrams, the failed march on Moscow was his downfall.
For days, international experts have been speculating about the future of Prigozhin and his Wagner group, which is also important to the Kremlin in Africa and the Middle East. After all, Putin thanks his ex-confidant Prigozhin and his army, which is fully equipped with tanks and aircraft, for significant territorial gains in his offensive war against Ukraine. For example, the Wagner army captured the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, but the battle for it continues.
Four-star general Robert Abrams, who commanded US forces in Korea until 2021, is certain that Prigozhin has already been disabled or is in prison. “I don’t think he’s alive. And if he does, he’s in some kind of prison,” said the American.
“No concrete evidence”
Abrams also believes Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov’s claim that Prigozhin and Putin met in person on June 29 — just five days after the mutiny ended — was fictitious. The General: “I would be very surprised if we ever see concrete evidence of a meeting between the two.”
Peskov reported that Putin National Guard Chief Viktor Solotov, 69, and Intelligence Chief Sergey Naryshkin, 68, met with 35 former high-ranking Wagner Group commanders for three hours. According to the Bild newspaper, Prigozchin was also said to have been present. Putin had previously publicly insulted the Wagner insurgents as “traitors”.
Putin reportedly listened to the Wagner commanders’ versions of how the mutiny came about. Peskov stated: “They emphasized that they are supporters and soldiers of our commander-in-chief and are ready to continue their fight for their homeland.”
But American General Abrams sees this as little more than a propaganda maneuver. Putin wants to show his compatriots that he has everything under control and that the Wagner fighters have sworn allegiance to him.
Abrams is not alone in his opinion. Former US Secretary of State and ex-CIA chief Mike Pompeo, 59, recently said, “I wouldn’t bet on Prigozhin’s life. He took on the king and failed.”
Wagner Group hands over thousands of weapons to Russia
The mercenary group Wagner is said to have handed over weapons to the Russian army. It apparently involves several tanks, 2,500 tons of ammunition and 20,000 firearms (see video above). According to the Ministry of Defense, the weapons are being maintained and made combat-ready.
