Travelers beware! – Strikes in Italy: Austria is also affected

Date:

A railway strike broke out in Italy on Thursday. Hundreds of train connections have been cancelled. The strike was also felt in Austria. The ÖBB announced that “train cancellations and delays” were to be expected. Travelers are asked to inquire about any changes prior to their trip. An Italian flight strike will follow on Saturday. Vienna Airport does not exclude effects.

The protest affects not only the state railway FS, but also the staff of the private railway company Italo, Italian trade unions reported. The originally 24-hour train strike was shortened by an intervention by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini and only lasted until 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Nightjets not affected
According to ÖBB, the Nightjets 295/294 and 233/235 are not affected by the railway strikes. The ÖBB does not expect any disruptions on trains via Tarvisio to Venice (RJ 130 – 133 or NJ 236/237) or for the EuroCity 134/135 to or from Trieste. The EC 83 and EC 84 trains on the Munich – Innsbruck – Bologna – Rimini route are also guaranteed. The ÖBB partner Trenord is also trying to keep the DB-ÖBB EuroCity trains and RJ 185/184 running according to plan on the route between Italy and Austria or Germany.

Travelers should obtain information from their tour operator
Saturday’s Italian air traffic strikes could also become an obstacle for travelers in Austria. “As things stand now, effects on flight connections between Vienna and Italy cannot be ruled out,” said a spokesman for Vienna Airport. The airport advises all travelers to obtain information from their tour operator or airline in advance.

No impact on federal airports
However, no effects are expected at the state airports. Both Innsbruck Airport and Graz Airport will not be affected by the strikes due to the lack of connections to Italy on Saturday, the respective spokesman said. In Salzburg there is still no reliable information whether the Eurowings flight to Olbia in Sardinia is affected, especially since the landing is planned after the announced strike period.

Italian trade unions are calling for strikes
Ground staff at Italian airports, handling and check-in services will strike from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The unions complain that her contract expired six years ago and are therefore demanding an immediate renewal. Malta Air pilots went on strike from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Vueling pilots and flight attendants will also go on strike on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Italian trade unions have called for work stoppages “because the company is not prepared to establish healthy and constructive working relations with the unions”.
