A forest fire has been threatening the Croatian coastal town of Sibenik since Thursday. More than 40 fire engines and five special aircraft were deployed. According to the authorities, there were also tourists in the immediate vicinity of the fire.
The forest fire hit two villages on the Krka Riviera on Wednesday, whose inhabitants were brought to safety by boats. The situation is worse than in a decade, said the head of civil protection in Šibenik, Danijel Mileta. There have been no injuries so far.
More than 100 firefighters on duty
According to the news portal Sibenik.in, more than 100 firefighters with 42 fire trucks are present. Panic reigned in the village of Zaton, several houses caught fire and impenetrable smoke billowed over the place, a reporter from the portal reported.
The plumes of smoke were also seen in Sibenik, just a few kilometers away. The Dalmatian city – next to Zadar one of the largest metropolises in the north of the region – is known as a starting point for trips to the Kornati archipelago.
Popular holiday destination for Austrians
The Krka Riviera is also a very popular holiday destination for Austrians. It extends from the mouth of the Krka River in the Stubalj Bay through the Sibenik Channel to the actual seacoast at Sibenik.
Wildfires and forest fires are common in Croatia during the summer. They are now benefiting from the ongoing drought. Last weekend, a fire near the port city of Pula on the Istrian peninsula destroyed 40 hectares of vegetation.
