Millions of public sector workers in Britain should get more money. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced salary increases for teachers, police officers and doctors on Thursday. Just hours earlier, residents of England had gone on strike.
A five-day strike was planned – the longest strike in the history of the National Health Service (NHS), according to the British PA news agency. Sunak called on unions to refrain from strikes.
Sunak: “Offer is final”
“Today’s offer is final. Salary is no longer discussed,” Sunak said. No strike, no matter how big, will change the decision. For example, according to the British news agency PA, teachers should receive a six and a half percent salary increase, police officers seven percent.
According to the British media, questions arise about financing on some points. Sunak announced that he would not take on any new debt or raise taxes. Instead, the fees that people from other countries have to pay if they want to get a visa for the UK should be increased.
