Italy faces more problems with public transport. After a train strike on Thursday, which caused a lot of inconvenience, ground staff at Italian airports, handling and check-in services are on strike from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Italian media warn of a “black Saturday” for travelers. At least 250,000 people are affected by the strike, the consumer organization Codacons estimates.
“Extraordinary Plan”
A total of 133 flights are canceled by airline ITA Airways alone. The airline said it had activated “an extraordinary plan” to limit passenger inconvenience. As many travelers as possible have been rebooked on the first available flights.
Malta Air pilots went on strike from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Vueling pilots and flight attendants will also go on strike on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Italian trade unions have called for work stoppages “because the company is not prepared to establish healthy and constructive working relations with the unions”.
Austrian travelers are also affected
The strikes in air traffic can also become an obstacle for travelers from Austria. “Because of the strike actions planned for Saturday, effects on the flight connections between Vienna and Italy cannot be ruled out,” a Vienna Airport spokesperson told the APA on Friday. “From today’s perspective, ten flights – six arriving and four departing – will be cancelled. The affected destinations are Bologna, Venice, Florence and Milan. In addition, individual delays cannot be ruled out.”
Vienna Airport advised all travelers to obtain information from their tour operator or airline in advance.
