New records threatened – high “Cerberus” heats up Europe over the weekend

Date:

Weather-wise, Europeans are in for a record weekend – meteorologists expect us to experience the hottest days on record. In many places the temperature will rise well above 40 degrees Celsius. The reason for the extremes is the high “Ceberus”.

So far, the European record stands at 48.8 degrees – measured in August 2021 in Sicily (Italy). The space agency ESA predicts that we could surpass this figure in Italy on Sunday. The reason for the current extremes is the high “Cerberus”. The Italian weather service named the heat wave after the many-headed hellhound of Greek mythology.

Greece is also currently struggling with the heat. Thebes registered the warmest day of the year so far on Friday with 44.2 degrees. The Acropolis tourist attraction in Athens also had to be partially closed to protect workers and tourists. Greeks in government service are allowed to stay in the home office and food delivery services are only on duty from 5 p.m.

Only recently was a global heat record surpassed: according to the US platform “Climate Reanalyzer”, the average global temperature for a week from July 3 was above the previous record value of 2016 – making it the warmest week since records began. With the extreme heat, the death toll is also rising – in the summer of 2022 there were more than 60,000 heat-related deaths in Europe.

Heat at the weekend also in Austria
After the storms of the past few days, the heat is also returning to Austria: up to 37 degrees are expected in the country at the weekend. The situation only calmed down for a short while! “The weather is prone to thunderstorms from Sunday,” said Nikolas Zimmermann, UBIMET meteorologist. In the south and east of the country it would be up to 35 degrees, in the west it is already cooling down with a cold front. The chance of thunderstorms will then increase considerably during the day.

Severe thunderstorms passed over large parts of Austria earlier, especially Tuesday evening and Wednesday night. Especially from Vorarlberg to Upper Austria, gusts of wind kept the emergency services on their toes.

Headaches, dehydration, little rest while sleeping: the hot days hit one or the other hard and put an enormous strain on the circulatory system. It is important to protect yourself from the high temperatures, because the weather not only brings swimming fun and outdoor activities, but also more dangers and accidents. On hot days, you should pay more attention to the sick and the elderly. Here are a few tips to prepare for the heat wave:

  • Avoid the midday heat outside
  • Drink plenty of water – this is just as important as loose, light clothing
  • Abstaining from alcohol – this creates an additional load on the circulatory system
  • Take a lukewarm shower before going to sleep
  • Take regular breaks while driving
  • Never leave children and animals in the parked car!

In addition, the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Public Health, Care and Consumer Protection has reactivated the heat telephone. under the phone number 0800 880 800 get personalized advice on how to survive the hot season.
