A violent storm is currently raging in the Spanish Mediterranean. A low pressure area brought heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and showers to Mallorca, Ibiza and other areas.
A video was posted from Ibiza showing a ship in very strong waves. It is not advisable to be at sea at the moment. Hopefully everyone is safe and sound, according to the Ibzia Dance Music Community on the X platform. According to media reports, the Pityuse Islands, Formentera and Ibiza were hit by storms on Wednesday morning. Numerous boats were pushed ashore. In La Savina, the wind reached peaks of up to 117 km/h.

More than 40 flight cancellations
In Mallorca, the consequences were felt later in the morning: in Palma, 44 flights were cancelled until noon due to the weather, and almost all other connections had major delays – often between four and five hours. Around noon, the first gusts of wind were observed.
The rain temporarily flooded the city, but disappeared after a short time. Around 12:40, hail, heavy rain and wind followed. The fire brigade had to be called out again and again to clear fallen trees or pump out full cellars. However, no major damage was initially reported.

Red alert for Thursday
On Wednesday, the second highest warning level orange was in effect from the national weather service Aeemet for the Balearic Islands and parts of the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Murcia, Valencia and Catalonia. On Thursday, the agency even issued a red alert for the northeast of Mallorca. Up to 180 liters of precipitation is expected to fall within a few hours.
Air traffic in Mallorca will probably be disrupted until Friday. It is rare for the red warning level to be declared in the area. However, the change in weather is usual in mid-August. The swimming weather is currently alternating with sometimes heavy thunderstorms.
