The hottest day of the year so far in Lower Austria was measured narrowly on Wednesday with 36.9 degrees Celsius, when storms followed. In Carinthia, trees fell on cars, injuring three people.
The incident took place in the afternoon in the municipality of Stockenboi (district Villach-Land). Fire brigade operations were also reported from the Gailtal and the district Spittal. The severe weather center (UWZ) reported thunderstorms and hail for the state of Carinthia on Wednesday evening (from 19:55). This was lifted a few hours later.
Hottest day of the year
Severe weather warnings with thunderstorms and hail were still in effect for Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg and Burgenland late in the evening (23:18). The warmest day of the year so far was reported earlier in Lower Austria. According to Geosphere Austria, 36.9 degrees Celsius was measured in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg (Bruck an der Leitha district). That was half a degree higher than the previous value: 36.4 degrees on June 30 at the weather station in the inner city of Vienna.

Floods in Vorarlberg
Tyrol and Vienna were at level orange. On Wednesday evening, severe weather warnings were issued for Styria and Vorarlberg. More than 40 fire brigade operations were reported from Vorarlberg, mainly in the greater Feldkirch area, in Lustenau and Dornbirn. The storm winds with gusts of more than 60 km/h caused trees to fall and insulated roofs to collapse. Cellars and underpasses were flooded. In Fraxern (district of Feldkirchen), more than 35 liters of rain per square meter fell in a very short time.
On Thursday evening there was no longer a warning for severe weather in Carinthia.

According to the UWZ, a few rain showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout Austria on Thursday night. These will last the longest in the north. On the holiday, sun and clouds will alternate, with the exception of a few showers in the north, it will be mainly dry. Only in the Mühl- and Waldviertel (Upper and Lower Austria) a thunderstorm cannot be ruled out.
Friday will also start with sun and clouds, although showers and heavy thunderstorms are possible from Vorarlberg to Obersteiermark from the afternoon. In the eastern and northern foothills of the Alps, however, it will remain dry and mostly sunny.
