Does harassment work? – Russian insider: Kremlin boss ‘laughs’ at NATO

Date:

According to former Russian UN representative Boris Bondarev, Russian ruler Vladimir Putin is laughing his ass off. The fact that NATO did not set a timetable for Ukraine’s accession at the Vilnius summit might confirm the Kremlin’s ruthless approach.

This is a “sign of weakness,” the former representative of Russia to the United Nations complained to the American magazine “Newsweek”. Bondarev resigned last year in protest at Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

But even in the West there is not only bliss. According to the former diplomat, NATO is not an alliance in which everyone agrees. According to him, Germany and the US in particular stand out. Bondarev went on to say that they were far too hesitant about the entry of war-torn Ukraine. And this is exactly what Putin and his top officials would “laugh” at.

“Hypocritical” approach
Because it’s so hypocritical, he continued. Every day, as American strategists, the British and others pondered their options in their cabinets, Ukrainians would die. “For what,” Bondarev complained. This approach gives the impression that the Ukrainians must first prove themselves worthy of NATO aid. They would have done that from the start, said the ex-diplomat.

Wrong signal to Moscow
Also sends the wrong signal to Kiev. “Putin might think that they are slowly changing their mind, that they are beginning to understand that they cannot win this war,” he said. The Kremlin, meanwhile, is convinced “that NATO has not invited Ukraine because it is afraid of Russia and is still afraid to provoke Putin”. However, this would only fuel the Kremlin’s intimidation tactics – for example, with even more threats of a nuclear strike.

No clear “Welcome”
At the Vilnius summit, NATO indicated that Ukraine would not join the alliance as long as the war with Russia was ongoing. “The message is: if you don’t want Ukraine to join NATO, you still have to be present in Ukraine or threaten it, you have to bomb Ukrainian cities,” Bondarev concluded.

At the beginning of last week, the 31 NATO member states confirmed Ukraine’s accession at their summit meeting in Vilnius. However, there is no timetable for this. Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyy had initially criticized this as “absurd”, but later praised the results of the meeting.
