Due to the persistent heat and drought, a barbecue ban was imposed on all public barbecue areas in Vienna on Monday. Due to the lack of sustained precipitation, the soil of the forests and meadows has dried up to a depth of more than 20 centimeters, reports the forest department (MA 49). This greatly increased the risk of wildfires.
Smoking, handling open flames and lights, and lighting fires in the forest are also prohibited, it said. The ban applies until further notice and will only be lifted in the event of persistent rain showers. Councilor for Climate and Environment Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) appealed to the population to comply. If a forest fire is discovered, the fire brigade must be called immediately via the emergency number 122.
Barbecuing is still allowed in private areas
Barbecuing in private gardens outside the danger zone of the forest remains allowed. Given the drought, the city warns to be extra careful here too. The ban in forest areas is strictly enforced by the city’s forestry department and forest rangers, it was stressed.
