North Korean leader Kim Jong-un wants to expand cooperation with Russia. The friendship between the two countries has existed for centuries and represents a “valuable strategic asset” for both sides, Kim wrote in a message to President Vladimir Putin on Russia’s National Day on Monday.
Against the backdrop of Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine, Kim spoke of “full support and solidarity” that his compatriots would send. “Justice will surely prevail and the Russian people will continue to praise the history of victory,” Kim told the North Korean state-controlled media. In any case, he is prepared, in consultation with Putin, to further shape the “strategic cooperation between the People’s Republic and Russia”.
Even after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the largely isolated North Korea pledged its political support to Putin’s course. In July last year, for example, the leadership in Pyongyang recognized the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which had broken away from Kiev, as independent states after Russia and Syria. As a result, Ukraine severed diplomatic relations with North Korea.
