No kilogram frustration or yo-yo effect? A real hype has arisen around the slimming syringe “Wegovy” from the Danish manufacturer Novo Nordisk. From now on, the infamous miracle weight loss drug can also be prescribed in Germany, the third country in Europe. Despite some side effects and unclear risks, the preparation could soon be introduced in Austria…
In the US, the drug with the active ingredient semaglutide was discussed on social networks many months ago, especially since some celebrities are said to have lost weight with the miracle injection. It promises a 15 percent weight reduction within a year.
For example, tech billionaire Elon Musk swears by fasting and the appetite suppressant ‘Wegovy’ as a secret to his appearance.
The preparation can now also be prescribed by doctors in Germany for obese patients. Manufacturer Novo Nordisk expects high demand but limited supply.
No more cravings for food and big appetite
The active substance semaglutide is already approved under the name “Ozempic” at a lower dose for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It mimics the action of the body’s own peptide hormone. On the one hand, this regulates insulin release, on the other hand it reduces appetite and thus calorie intake. In addition, semaglutide increases the feeling of satiety and reduces food cravings. “Wegovy” is injected under the skin once a week by the patient himself. The active substance is contained in pre-filled pens, similar to a highlighter, which are very easy to use.
The magic bullet is not for everyone
But not everyone can use the slimming syringe. “Wegovy” is only approved for long-term weight management in obese people and can be prescribed from a body mass index (BMI) of 30. In the case of weight-related diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure, the drug can be prescribed earlier. Young people from the age of 12 who are obese or weigh more than 60 kilograms can also use “Wegovy”. However, the injections alone should not be the solution for any of these groups – they serve much more as a supplement to sports and nutrition. However, it is touted and promoted as a panacea and “lifestyle product” on many social networks such as TikTok.
Side effects and risks: Unclear data
Most Wegovy users report nausea, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting. However, the manufacturer Novo Nordisk also mentions other side effects such as inflammation of the pancreas, gallstones and visual disturbances. The EU Security Commission also reviews data on the risk of suicidal thoughts and thoughts of self-harm. However, it is not yet clear whether the reported cases are related to the drug or the underlying diseases of the patients.
Panacea soon in Austria?
Anyone who is now convinced of the slimming injection, despite the many side effects, will probably have to be patient a little longer. In expert circles it is assumed that a market introduction in Austria is no longer expected this year. However, according to the Austrian branch of Novo Nordisk, they are working to make “Wegovy” available to Austria as soon as possible, the “Kurier” reports.
However, there is no exact schedule yet. Denmark was the first European country to introduce the slimming product. Then came Norway and now Germany. Great Britain follows next.
