It’s a game of chance that really shouldn’t be a game of chance: Max lost 10,000 euros playing Austria’s most popular video game “FIFA”. Like many others, he fell victim to the “loot boxes”.
“It all started when I got my first console for Christmas at the age of nine,” Max (name modified by the editors) recalls his innocent start in the gaming world. He would like to remain anonymous for the conversation with the “Krone”. The passionate gambler is now 23 years old and deeply in debt. Max lost 10,000 euros (!) while gambling – but not at the machines or in the casino. Just like 32 percent of the Austrians who gamble (see graph), Max also prefers to play “FIFA”.
