For two German winter sports enthusiasts, their tobogganing and skiing excursions in Tyrol ended in hospital on Thursday morning. A 28-year-old crashed her sled into a tree, and a 59-year-old fell several meters during an unusual descent. Both women were seriously injured.
On Friday morning around 8:40 am, the 28-year-old German sledded from the Schweinfurter Hütte in Niederthai, a town in the Ötztal municipality of Umhausen (Imst district), into the valley. “She lost control of her sled on a steeper, partially frozen section and went over the right edge of the trail,” police said. After sledding a few meters down the slope, she collided with a tree and suffered serious injuries. The German received first aid on the spot from the crew of a rescue helicopter and was then flown to hospital.
Flew to the Innsbruck clinic
Around 11:30 am, the 59-year-old German skied downhill on a variant descent in open terrain in the Hochzillertal ski area in the municipality of Kaltenbach (Schwaz district). The skier had an accident on a slope that was approximately 45 to 50 degrees steep and subsequently fell approximately 20 to 25 meters. “The winter athlete suffered serious injuries,” the director said. After initial care from winter sports enthusiasts, the slope rescue team and the rescue helicopter team, she was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck.
