Not legal – state of war: Putin spokesman rows back again

Date:

Shortly after saying that Russia was at war (see video above), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has now rowed back. Legally, the status of the combat operations is retained, making it a ‘special military operation’.

Peskov said this on Friday when asked by media representatives. “De jure it is a special military operation.” The spokesperson made the comments after the Russian military carried out what was likely the largest joint attack on the neighboring country’s energy infrastructure on Friday evening.

Here you can see a tweet from university professor Gerhard Mangott, who researches Russian foreign policy.

Martial law in four areas
If martial law were actually declared, it would lead to further restrictions on the population in Russia. For example, during a war a curfew can be imposed. To date, martial law does not apply at the national level, but only in the partially occupied territories of Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhia.

As reported, the Kremlin officially acknowledged for the first time on Friday that Russia was at war. “We are in a state of war. Yes, it started as a special military operation, but as soon as this group was formed and the collective West became a participant in it on the side of Ukraine, this became a war for us,” said spokesman Peskov.

No right to exist for Ukraine
On this occasion he also once again questioned the existence of Ukraine. Russia cannot allow the existence on its borders of a country that is ready to use any means to take over the Crimean Peninsula. The Ukrainian peninsula was conquered and annexed by Russia in 2014. The war in Ukraine started in February 2022.

At that time, President Vladimir Putin was already talking about a ‘special military operation’. The Russian army occupied large parts of the neighboring country, but failed to capture the capital Kiev as planned. Later, Ukrainian forces, also with Western military assistance, expelled the occupying forces from some parts of the country.

Russian authorities currently occupy a fifth of Ukraine, including Crimea. Tens of thousands of people died in the fighting, including many civilians. Russian troops are currently on the offensive.
