The pressure is mounting – the Mercosur pact against climate has been averted for now

Date:

Important stage victory against Mercosur! The intended conclusion of the Pact at the EU Summit in South America (CELAC) failed miserably.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had stubbornly rejected the already vague additional document of the Brussels Pact on the protection of the rainforest. The South American statesman dropped the signature, probably also because of the possible ecological sanctions that the EU demands for violations. However, neither the EU nor Latin America are giving up: the pact must now be pushed through under the Spanish Council presidency.

But the chances of that happening are still small. Because in addition to Austria – Chancellor Karl Nehammer repeated his no in Brussels – the great agricultural country France is also against Mercosur in this form.

‘Blocked agreement can no longer be saved’
“The distorted and outdated agreement can no longer be saved. There must be a real ecological restart of the negotiations,” said EU mandate Alexander Bernhuber (ÖVP). Greenpeace and SPÖ environment spokeswoman Julia Herr call on the government all the more vehemently to oppose attempts to split the pact into an environmental chapter and a purely trade chapter: “This trick would mean that the consent of all EU states would no longer be required. are . Austria’s veto would be lifted.”
