An experienced Carinthian pilot has died in the French Alps, but the circumstances are still unclear. The accident site is considered to be one of the European gliding centres.
The French Alps between Nice and Lyon are considered a special area for glider pilots. Hundreds of pilots are busy especially in the summer months, although some airports are only reserved for experienced pilots because the runways are short or inclined. Nevertheless, the surrounding mountains offer sliding adventures in a class of their own.
Walkers heard a loud bang
The experienced Carinthian was also there this week and left on Sunday with his glider from Gap-Tallard airport for a cross-country flight. According to French police, the time of the accident is believed to be 5:10 p.m. Hikers heard a loud bang but had to descend for an hour to make a distress call.
investigations are underway
The plane crashed at an altitude of 2800 meters near the Lac de l’Aupillon. Any help came too late for the pilot. What led to the accident is still under investigation. The weather at the time of the accident is being assessed, as is the wreckage of the aircraft.
Local sailing club mourns
The French authorities apparently have not yet contacted the Carinthian authorities. The Nötsch Sailing Club, to which the crashed pilot belongs, has in any case canceled his flying day for next weekend. “Because of a sad incident,” confirms chairman Bernhard Probst. The crashed Carinthian may have floated with friends in the French Alps. After the tragic accident, they finally resigned.
