More than 1,000 people have been sentenced to prison terms after the riots in France. About 740 of them will actually end up in prison, others will receive suspended sentences, French Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti announced on Wednesday.
Three weeks ago, 17-year-old Nahel was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic check near Paris. The result was that violent riots shook the country for nights on end. There was repeated looting, arson and violent clashes between police and demonstrators.
The unrest has now subsided. According to French insurers, the damage amounts to some 650 million euros. Since then, 1,050 people have been sentenced to prison terms and about 740 have actually served their sentences. Others received suspended sentences, the French justice minister said. The officer who fired the fatal shot at the youngster is being investigated on suspicion of manslaughter.
