Two people were killed in severe storms in the Croatian capital Zagreb on Wednesday. Hurricane-force winds swept through the city in the afternoon, uprooting trees, damaging roofs and bringing traffic to a halt, Croatian television HRT reported.
Video recordings on social networks show the strength of the storm. The mayor of the Croatian capital, Tomislav Tomašević, called on residents to stay at home.
A 50-year-old pedestrian and a 48-year-old motorist were killed, Zagreb police said. Eight other people suffered injuries, hospital doctors reported.
According to local reports, telephone lines were temporarily overloaded and more than 700 emergency calls came in within a very short time. Hailstones the size of a golf ball also fell from the sky.
Tomašević advocated calling 911 only in life-threatening emergencies to relieve emergency services. Croatian media reports about chaotic conditions in the capital.
