A village wedding in the Jhargram region of West Bengal came to an abrupt end when uninvited four-legged friends arrived on the scene. Tanmoy Singha and Mampi Singha had just tied the knot and were about to settle in for the party along with relatives and many friends when the herd appeared. The bridal couple fled on a motorcycle!
“The guests were about to eat when we heard the elephants,” groom Tanmoy told the Times of India on Wednesday. The smell of the food – which included lentil soup, mutton and shrimp – attracted the herd.
According to the groom, the guests were immediately sent home. He and his bride fled the animals on motorcycles after the incident.
In India there are always encounters between wild elephants and humans, which often end fatally. One of the reasons is that settlements are moving closer to protected areas. It happens again and again that elephants invade villages and even houses.
