The last generation climate group was not classified as a criminal organization in Germany. A Justice Department spokesperson said on Wednesday that the initial suspicion, previously denied, was not objectionable (see video above).
Justice Senator Felor Badenberg (independent) had applied for the exam after taking office in May. The group Last Generation has been known since 2022 for sit-ins on the street to draw attention to the consequences of climate change. About 2,000 procedures have reached the Berlin public prosecutor’s office. The group is not classified as criminal, it said Wednesday.
In neighboring Brandenburg, investigations are still underway against the last generation. The background, for example, are attacks by activists since April 2022 on factories at the PCK Schwedt refinery. The Potsdam regional court had also seen an initial suspicion that the climate group could be a criminal organization.

“From the point of view of the department, the Brandenburg decision can only be applied to the situation in Berlin to a limited extent,” the case law said. However, the current assessment does not preclude a different assessment in the future. It should be recorded how the protest events develop.
In Vienna, the last generation caused chaos in early traffic on Tuesday, among other things. Actions in other states will follow in the coming weeks.
