Bitter accident at the Graz police detention center: after two Hungarian burglars were caught, the Graz public prosecutor’s office detained only one man, the other was set free. But the wrong person was fired – she’s been in hiding ever since.
The incredible case was presented in an anonymous letter to the “Krone” on Thursday morning and has since been confirmed by the Directorate of the State Police: Last Friday, a false suspect was released from the Graz Police Detention Center!
It concerns two Hungarians (37 and 47 years old) who allegedly committed burglaries last Thursday in the Lend and Puntigam districts. During a vehicle inspection by police, they tried to hide items between the front passenger seat and the center armrest – they included a stolen debit card and instructions on how to disable a home alarm system.
Men are similar in appearance
The two men were arrested and taken to the police station. According to last week’s police broadcast, the 37-year-old confessed, the 47-year-old denied any complicity. The public prosecutor’s office has only taken one of the Hungarians into pre-trial detention, the other must be released and set free.
But then the confusion: the wrong suspect was released. The police justifies this with “language barriers, the visual similarity of the two suspects and the same nationality”. According to the police, the officers noticed the mix-up “shortly after the discharge”, the anonymous letter says two hours.
Police emphasizes: ‘No danger from people in hiding’
As a result, the second suspect was released and a manhunt for the first man was launched. However, so far without success. The man poses no visible threat, police said.
Internal measures have been taken immediately to ensure that this does not happen again. These include “sensitization and the six-eyes principle”. The processes are evaluated to prevent the risk of errors.
