“Jump off the bridge” – that’s what a 14-year-old student wrote to her 17-year-old friend. The instigator was sentenced to 90 hours of community service in Upper Austria on Thursday. The mentally unstable and depressed 17-year-old was rescued at the last minute by her mother.
The previously impeccable and remorseful 14-year-old woman from Rohrbach took full responsibility for her ill-fated chat message in court. Before that, there had been a heated argument between the two girls. That was not only due to the 14-year-old, as the public prosecutor emphasized. There were serious insults on both sides, and the 17-year-old, for her part, provoked en masse.
“In the Heat of Battle”
In the heat of the moment, the 14-year-old wrote to her 17-year-old acquaintance: “You should be ashamed of yourself. Jump off the bridge, the shovel is on me!” According to her lawyer, she was not aware of the implications of her words at the time, even though she knew about the victim’s psychological problems. When she received a photo of an empty pack of pills in response, she didn’t know how to react.
Barely survived
After countless lengthy conversations with her family, friends, and a supervisor, she realized that her actions had been wrong, thoughtless, and could have easily ended in death for the 17-year-old. Although she had not gone to said bridge, she had consumed a lot of alcohol and a box of pills instead. The mother called an ambulance and presumably saved her daughter’s life.
Community work and care
The 14-year-old student was charged with involvement in attempted suicide. “You risk a maximum of two years in prison for this,” said Ulrike Breiteneder, spokeswoman for the Linz public prosecutor’s office. The judge and jury finally agreed on a diversion: 90 hours of community service that the student must do over the next six months. She will also be taken care of by a social worker until the end of the year.
