Despite tense relations, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (100) traveled to Beijing for several days. There he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other government officials.
China will never forget Kissinger’s contribution “to developing Sino-US relations and strengthening friendship between the two peoples,” Xi Jinping said at Thursday’s meeting. In July 1971, Kissinger undertook a secret trip to the People’s Republic, taking the first steps toward normalizing US-China relations. That was the right decision at the time, Xi says today. The process had benefited both countries and changed the world.
“Relations between our two countries are linked to world peace and the progress of human society,” centenarian Kissinger said at the meeting. At the same time, he thanked the Chinese president for allowing the meeting to take place in the same state guest house where he first met with Chinese leaders more than 50 years ago.
Light relaxation?
Earlier, Kissinger met with Defense Minister Li Shangfu and top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi during his stay in China. Relations between the US and China are tense due to several issues. The government under Joe Biden sees China as the biggest geopolitical challenge and is taking a tough stance. The Chinese government, in turn, accuses the United States of hegemonic ambitions. Since several senior US government officials traveled to Beijing in recent weeks, observers now assume that the situation has eased somewhat.
