That’s what new Pharmig president Ingo Raimon said in an APA interview. In the previous season in autumn and winter there was a particularly high wave of infections, “that was atypical”. “Of course that will affect the supply shortfall issue and that’s not something that’s in our power as an industry.”
In general, however, the prices for medicines in Austria are considerably cheaper than many people would think. For example, there was no adjustment for inflation. “Pharmaceuticals is a highly regulated market,” Raimon said. The legislator, the social security system, but also enforcement and administrative bodies would contribute to this. Prescribing active ingredients now under discussion would “certainly not have a stabilizing effect on the market,” the Pharmig president warned.

“It’s great that member companies still have productions here,” he also said. Some companies have invested around four billion euros in their infrastructure. In general, it is economically important to keep the industry in the country and more needs to be done in the coming years. According to Raimon, there is generally “good infrastructure and good doctors” in Austria, but their administrative work should be facilitated. In this way, the work on the patient is intensified again.
According to Raimon, other countries in Europe have now also taken initiatives to prevent a shortage of medicines in the autumn. However, he does not yet dare to estimate the effects.
