The Kremlin continues to lash out with threatening gestures. Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened Poland for sending troops to neighboring Belarus. And without being able to provide proof, the Russian rulers are also sure: Warsaw wants to occupy Western Ukraine.
Poland is currently moving troops to neighboring Belarus. Putin is not happy about that at all. “Belarus is part of the union state. And unleashing aggression against Belarus would mean aggression against the Russian Federation. We will respond to this with all the means at our disposal,” the head of state complained at a meeting of the National Security Council on Friday.
The government of NATO and the EU state of Poland had previously announced that it wanted to move an as yet unknown number of its own soldiers to the east of the country because of the presence of Russian Wagner mercenaries in neighboring Belarus.
Putin is known for being paranoid
Amid the self-ordered offensive war against Ukraine, Putin also accused Poland of planning, without any evidence, to occupy western Ukraine. There are reports of an alleged planned creation of a Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian military unit, he said.
Here, too, he has provided no evidence. The unit should be used in Ukraine “allegedly to ensure the security of present-day western Ukraine,” Putin said. “But really, if you call things by their proper names, it’s about the subsequent occupation of these areas.”
Russian Propaganda
Russia, which has been openly at war with Ukraine since February 24, 2022, has illegally annexed five Ukrainian territories, including the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. Russian troops currently occupy about a fifth of Ukraine’s territory.
While Russian propaganda justifies its own bellicose actions, it repeatedly claims without any basis that Poland, which is one of the closest allies of the attacked Ukraine, is harboring its own occupation plans.
