The requiem for the late Wolfgang Pucher (84) will take place on August 12. The “Krone” knows what parting the founder wanted from Vinzi – and what he gets in the grave.
The sudden death of the Styrian priest for the poor, Wolfgang Pucher, has caused grief and dismay far beyond the white-green borders of the country. The much appreciated but not uncontroversial ‘rebel of charity’ died at the age of 85 on the island of Korcula. According to Croatian media reports, he suffered a heart attack while swimming and was unable to recover. An autopsy was ordered, after which the body will be transferred to Graz.
He wanted a colorful mass without a long funeral speech
The requiem for the lazarist priest and founder of the Vinzi works will take place on August 12 – as Pucher had imagined, in “his” Vinzenzkirche. Senior public figures have announced their presence, including many residents of the poverty-stricken Slovak village of Hostice, whom the pastor has cared for for decades. The resident of Hausmannstätten had decreed that it should be a “colorful” funeral, without much fanfare and long speeches.
The “Krone” has other personal wishes of the legendary social justice warrior: Wolfgang Pucher refused an honorary grave from the city of Graz and instead wants to be buried in the Leonhard cemetery – surrounded by male residents of the Vinzidorf, who will find eternal rest there after their death.
There is a traffic sign at the grave
A street sign with the indication “Heßgasse” is placed in the grave of the deceased. This has symbolic power, because as a young pastor, Wolfgang Pucher took care of the emigrant settlement in the Heßgasse in Graz, where 800 people lived and where unemployment, alcohol and violence were part of everyday life. The street name stigmatized the residents for years.
According to information from “Krone”, the capital is also thinking of an appreciation in public space. The proposal to name a square or a street after Vinzi’s founder will be discussed in the coalition committee on Monday. This is confirmed by the mayor.
