High notes in Romania – Orban: “The balance of the world is out of balance”

Date:

In his traditional address to people of Hungarian descent in Romanian Transylvania, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban once again went to great lengths to present his worldview. The focus: a strengthening China, a weak EU and an unbalanced world.

Orban initially criticized the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the summer university in Baile Tusnad on Saturday. They advised in writing what he should not talk about in his speech – such as national symbols and collective rights of minorities. But these rights would exist and also belong to people of Hungarian descent in Transylvania, Orban stressed. About one and a half million members of the Hungarian ethnic group live in Romania.

Support for Romania in the Schengen Plan
Orban says smugly that Romania is the 20th head of government since he came to power in Hungary. At the same time, the right-wing prime minister stressed that Hungary would support Romania’s Schengen membership. Austria had recently strongly opposed this.

“China has caught up and overtaken the US”
Orban praised China’s development as a new global power, with China overtaking and overtaking the US: “We are seeing US dominance continue to be weakened.” China has thrown the balance of the world off balance – according to Orban, “the old fear of the Western world”. There are no constant winners and losers in world politics.

“Europe feels surrounded”
The long-time head of government also presented some classics from his repertoire, such as the “great debate” between the EU and Hungary on “population exchange through migration” and the “LGBTQ lobby”. Migration and gender cannot be pushed back on a liberal basis, according to Orban. Europe is “tormented with fear” and feels “surrounded” because it is surrounded by seven billion people.

Russia is cut off from the European economy, but it cannot be cut off from the rest of the world. At the same time, Europe has lost its competitiveness as energy prices have doubled compared to elsewhere in the world.

Countering Romanian nationalists: “Romanian soil forever”
Romanian nationalists tried to disrupt Orban’s speech. They sent the message “Transylvania is forever Romanian soil” to the prime minister of the neighboring country.
