Moscow orders evacuation of Nova Kakhovka ahead of Ukrainian advance

The city and its surroundings are now becoming fortified areas to resist Volodimir Zelensky’s troops

Following their withdrawal from Kherson, Kremlin forces are preparing for a possible “hostilities or bombing” scenario in the still-occupied Nova Kakhovka, located on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River. Before the arrival of the Kiev army, Pavel Filipchuk, head of the Russian military-civil administration of the city, located in the Kherson region, ordered the immediate evacuation of the population and authorities to Tuapse, in the Russian region from Krasnodar this Saturday . , 500 kilometers west of Kherson and along the Crimean peninsula.

According to the TASS news agency, the city and its surroundings are now becoming fortified areas to resist the Ukrainian advance. Filipchuk assured that this arrival would take place as long as Volodímir Zelensky’s troops managed to cross a bridge badly damaged by the fighting.

The Nova Kakhovka Viaduct was one of two that remained standing across the Dnieper until a few days ago – the other being the Antonivsky Viaduct – but continued attacks have made it worse. In addition, according to satellite images from the company Maxar and videos that have come into the hands of the Ukrainians in Kherson, after withdrawing from the region, Moscow volatilized what was left of the bridge to prevent the Ukrainian advance. Maxar explained in a statement that parts of the dam’s northern extension and gates had been “deliberately destroyed.”

Meanwhile, pro-Russian authorities in Kherson today declared the city of Genichesk the region’s new “temporary administrative capital”. On the shores of the Sea of Azov and about twenty kilometers north of the border of the Crimean peninsula, this city is located on the eastern side of the territory annexed by Moscow with a referendum that the West has labeled “false”.

“Currently, Genichesk is the temporary administrative capital of Kherson Oblast. All major authorities are concentrated there,” the representative of the pro-Russian government of Kherson, Alexander Fomin, confirmed to the Russian agency TASS. This municipality, an important seaport and tourist center in the area, came under Kremlin control on February 27, three days after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine.

On the other hand, fears of a possible nuclear risk resurfaced after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission to the Kharkiv Institute of Technology (KIPT) that took place from 8 to 10 this month. The United Nations agency today published the conclusions of the study confirming serious material damage caused by bombings of nuclear research facilities. However, they found no evidence of radioactive leaks or disappearance of any declared nuclear material.

“The extent of the damage is dramatic and shocking, even worse than expected,” warned IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi, who stressed that “almost all buildings on the site have been affected, many of which are likely beyond repair.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Verhsinin said on Saturday that the extension of the agreement for the export of Ukrainian grain and Russian fertilizers in full conflict is an unresolved issue six days after the date scheduled, in principle, for the entry into force of the extension of the agreement. “No”, the politician replied emphatically to the question in question, before reminding that “all circumstances will have to be taken into account” once the initial agreement expires next Friday. “We must take everything into account and we must not forget the terrorist attacks by the Ukrainian side on the Crimean bridge, including the terrorist attack in the waters of Sevastopol,” he said.
