After a laboratory analysis, there is now more clarity: no lioness was out in the woods near Kleinmachnow, south of Berlin. An initial evaluation of a faecal sample indicated that the animal sought was a herbivore.
The result of a hair sample is expected Monday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the Potsdam-Mittelmark district said Monday. Because the hair root was missing from the hair found, it was compared to a pair of lions at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Leipzig.
Big search
The search for an alleged predator has made headlines outside Germany since last Thursday. The authorities no longer saw an acute danger on Friday and, based on the assessment of experts, no longer assumed that a lioness was traveling in the region.
Searches – including by helicopters and drones – had also turned up no evidence of a free-roaming big cat.
Kleinmachnow police and the community started on Thursday because of a cell phone video of a witness. The population has been asked to limit outdoor activities.
