Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has signed into law Russia’s controversial law banning “sex reassignment operations”. The Russian president signed the law on Monday. According to this, people in the giant kingdom who have a different gender identity are no longer allowed to undergo surgery or be prescribed hormones. Human rights activists complain about violation of the right to self-determination.

Marriages after gender reassignment are annulled
The State Duma unanimously approved the law on July 14. Under the law, marriages in which one partner has changed sex in the past are also annulled. However, surgical interventions are still allowed if the genitals are malformed.

The initiators of the law had stated that they wanted to protect cultural traditions and family values in the fight against “Western ideologies”.
