Flooding, heavy hail and muddy roads – Carinthia also did not sit still on Tuesday. The storms moved across the country from the west and reached the Lower Carinthian area in the early evening.
While the whole of Carinthia has been ravaged by storms over the past two weeks, bad memories will probably have surfaced on Tuesday among the residents of the neighboring valley. Because first the federal road B 98 between Afritz and Feld am See was completely interrupted by several mudslides – several cars got stuck in between – and then the Afritzer Bach also overflowed. The inhabitants of Arriach had a similar experience, where meadows and fields were flooded by the heavy rainfall.
Temporarily 15,000 households without electricity
The storm had affected the power supply in Carinthia again – the Feldkirchen area and Lake Wörthersee were particularly hard hit. “We are currently experiencing multiple outages at different voltage levels. This makes restoring the power supply very difficult,” explains Robert Schmaranz, Kärnten Netz. “From lightning strikes to trees fallen on power lines, everything is currently there and all available forces are in use.”
Good news arrived around 8 p.m. “Most households are back with power – our technicians have done a great job,” emphasizes Josef Stocker from Kelag. “At the moment there are still about 2,000 households without electricity. But we will continue to work tirelessly.”
Roads blocked by debris flows
Around half past four, heavy storms fell almost simultaneously on the Ossiacher See and in the municipalities of Fresach, Weissenstein and Ferndorf. Due to flooding and mudslides, the village street and the Kirchweg in Steindorf had to be closed. Several roads were also blocked in the Drautal communities. The volunteer fire brigade in the area had to turn out.
The following video shows the conditions near Rauth near Feld am See, which may have led to the B 98 landslide. The initiator had heard trees breaking and also lines being destroyed – he helped with his tractor to repair the damage: “The weather came very suddenly, but it has been raining all day and the ground is oversaturated.”
The district of Feldkirchen was also hit by heavy hailstorms and at the Magdalensberg in Pirk near Ottmanach people and animals had to save themselves from the storm.
Some roads in the area were blocked by fallen trees and firefighters were back on the job. Further information will follow.
