According to official information, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu traveled to neighboring North Korea to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. He will participate in various celebrations of “The Victory of the Korean People in the Homeland Liberation War 1950-1953” for three days.
Shoigu’s visit to Pyongyang serves to strengthen Russian-North Korean military cooperation and is an important step in the development of bilateral cooperation, the Moscow ministry said. At the end of March, the US government announced that Russia is trying to buy weapons and ammunition from North Korea for its war against Ukraine. Pyongyang is also said to have armed Wagner’s mercenary force, which had long fought alongside Moscow.
cooperation with Russia
Totalitarian North Korea is largely isolated internationally, partly due to its nuclear missile program. There is only loose contact with the veto powers in the UN Security Council, China and Russia. The country has been dictatorially ruled by the Kim dynasty since the 1950s.
July 27, the end of the Korean War, is commemorated as Victory Day in Pyongyang. The war ended with an armistice that divided Korea into two states along the 38th parallel. Between 2 and 4 million Koreans are believed to have died in the 1950-1953 war.
