What is that? A Viennese couple asked themselves this question during their holiday on the idyllic Greek island of Crete when they made a gruesome find on the beach (see photo above). Marine biologist Daniel Abed-Navandi of the House of the Sea of the “Crown” was able to clarify what the “strange creature” is.
The inanimate creature stranded on a beach in Crete on Monday looked pretty scary. A couple from Vienna, who is currently on holiday there, made the discovery together with a few other holidaymakers.
The holiday couple soon started their own investigation. It was initially suspected that the animal was a dolphin-like creature previously only seen in Mexico and Crete – but no one was sure. The “Krone” finally asked for clarity Daniel Abed-Navandi, the deputy director of the House of the Sea.
Expert of the House of the Sea solves mysteries
“The photo shows a moray eel (Muraena Helena),” Abed-Navandi clarified. The Mediterranean moray eel is a normally hidden, nocturnal predator of the moray eel family (Muraenidae).
Also known as “Terrors of the Seas”.
The couple is lucky that the snake-like animal has just washed up lifeless on the beach. The predatory fish with strong teeth and sharp teeth can cause serious wounds. Some types of moray eels are also venomous and are known as the “horrors of the sea”.
However, Abed-Navandi clarified, “They don’t look that scary alive.”
