At least 40 people were killed in a shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa on Wednesday.
Just Tuesday, the crew of the rescue ship “Geo Barents” of the aid organization “Doctors Without Borders” rescued 49 people during a mission off the island (see video above) on Monday evening.
In 2023, 91,000 people reached southern Italy
The island of Lampedusa is once again facing a strong refugee movement. The number of people seeking protection who arrived in Italy this year has more than doubled compared to the same period in 2022. Between January and early August, 91,000 people reached the coast of southern Italy by ship across the Mediterranean, compared to 40,000 in the same period in 2022, according to information from the Italian Ministry of the Interior. Nearly 10,000 unaccompanied minors also arrived in Italy this year. In seven years, so many migrants had never arrived in southern Italy.
Soon more information.
