Activists from the “Association against Animal Factories” (VGT) have again identified a horror stable in Vorarlberg. On a farm in the district of Bregenz, 200 cattle live in appalling conditions.
There are images that can make you feel sick: cattle – from mother cow to calf – literally bathing in their own excrement. Cattle whose hooves are so long that they can barely move. Cattle that are visibly malnourished, partly due to inadequate feed facilities. Cattle that are injured because they keep bumping into each other in the much too small area. Cattle with pointed nose rings to prevent mutual suckling.
“Certificate of Poverty for Society”
And in the end it is cattle, the meat of which is for sale in supermarkets and butchers with various regional quality marks. “It is really sad and unworthy how these cattle have to live squeezed between mountains of manure for meat production. A sign of inadequacy for our society that we allow such misery,” VGT campaigner David Richter is stunned by the situation.
Reform of the control system is required
What makes him and his fellow activists at least as angry: Neighbors have repeatedly informed the authorities about the abuses, but nothing happened. For the Vorarlberg VGT activist Sandy P. Peng, urgent action is required in view of this fact: “The control system must be reformed!” The VGT has documented and reported animal suffering. It will be interesting to see if the responsible authorities will take action this time.
