Polish Health Minister Adam Niedzielski has resigned after coming under fire for violating medical confidentiality.
Initially, there was great anger over a critical television report about problems with electronic prescriptions for patients after surgery. A hospital doctor in Poland had criticized the decisions of the Minister of Health in this regard. He then claimed that it worked very well, after all, the doctor in question could prescribe psychotropic drugs and painkillers himself.
The Medical Association reacted furiously to such a violation of medical confidentiality. Lukasz Jankowski, head of the Supreme Medical Association, even announced a criminal charge because the minister had exceeded his powers.
Prime Minister accepts resignation
The excitement came at the worst possible time for the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party. After all, there are parliamentary elections on 15 October. To protect his party, Niedzielski resigned. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told journalists on Tuesday: “I have decided to accept the resignation of the health minister.” Katarzyna Sojka will be his successor. She is a Member of Parliament for the PiS and a specialist in internal medicine.
