The number of corona cases is increasing on the Balearic holiday island of Mallorca – especially popular with Austrians, British and Germans. “The disease is currently widespread on the islands – and the trend is increasing,” the Ministry of Health reports.
It is suspected that major events are behind the increasing numbers. For example, there were 65,000 spectators at the ‘Mallorca Live Festival’.
Infection peak expected
The new Covid variant ‘KP.2’ would also have an influence on the increasing number of cases. The ‘FliRT’ variant is thought to be responsible for about 15 percent of the diseases. However, it is expected that the peak of the number of infections will be reached soon.
Just a few weeks ago, the incidence in the Balearic Islands was 28 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – and was therefore quite low. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) now estimates the incidence in the population at 500 diseases per 100,000 people.
Last year, there was also an increase in the number of corona cases during the holidays.
