According to a media report, the German armaments group Rheinmetall is preparing a new export of Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine. The company has therefore bought 50 tanks of the older Leopard 1 type from the Belgian company OIP Land Systems, the “Handelsblatt” reports, citing industry circles.
Freddy Versluys, CEO of OIP Land Systems, told British newspaper The Guardian that he had sold 49 tanks to another European government, whom he could not name due to a confidentiality clause. He was also unable to disclose the price. Versluys added that it could take up to six months for them to be on the battlefield in Ukraine.
30 tanks are actually delivered
The “Handelsblatt” reported that the tanks should now be re-equipped at the Düsseldorf Rheinmetall Group’s German sites for use in Ukraine. In the end, about 30 of the 50 vehicles could be delivered. The Leopard 1 is the predecessor of the Leopard 2 currently used by the German Bundeswehr.
