At the end of April, the Ministry of Education announced approximately 7,100 teaching places for the coming school year. More than 11,800 people have registered. Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) is happy with the success of his ‘Great Job’ campaign. The fact that there are more registrations than vacancies does not mean that all 109,000 open teaching hours have already been filled.
Last year there were significantly more applicants than vacancies. However, as always, there is a problem with distribution. There were too many applications for many positions, none for others. There was a surplus of interested parties for some subjects and too few for others. The application process and allocations to the individual locations are currently underway. Every year an attempt is made to ‘redirect’ applicants who are empty-handed at one school to schools with vacancies.
Converted to full-time teaching positions, there are 5,000 vacancies that need to be filled, and a total of a third have been advertised as part-time positions. This corresponds to the current part-time quota for teaching staff; it is slightly higher: 4 in 10 teachers. About 120,000 teachers teach throughout Austria.
