Two people missing – Nine bodies found after fire in France

Date:

At least nine people have been killed in a fire in Wintzenheim in Alsace. Two others were still missing Wednesday afternoon. The potential eleven victims are probably ten adults with mild intellectual disabilities and one caregiver.

“Unfortunately, there is no great doubt,” Christophe Marot of the local prefecture had already tempered hopes that the missing people would survive before the bodies were found, according to broadcaster France Info. “All these people were in the shelter and couldn’t get out,” Marot said. As a gendarmerie spokesperson stressed, the search for the missing persons in Wintzenheim near Colmar continued.

French President Emmanuel Macron on the fire: “In the light of this tragedy, I think of the victims, the injured, the people close to them.” Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne called the incident terrible. She wanted to go to the scene of the incident. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin thanked the fire brigade for their prompt action.

A fire has broken out in the holiday home
The fire in the holiday home broke out around 6:30 am on Wednesday. One person was injured and another was in shock, the prefecture said. A total of 17 people were brought to safety. 300 of the house’s 500 square feet caught fire. According to the prefecture, a group of adults from Nancy stayed at the property. A spokesman for the fire service spoke about a group of an association that is committed to people with disabilities.

The numerous rescuers quickly had the fire under control. Referring to Marot, broadcaster France Info initially reported in the morning that the house was still smoking and that the fire brigade could not yet enter the building.
